چکیده

In cellular Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks, interference on the uplink is the limiting factor for the number of users that can be served in a single cell. Thus, interference reduction mechanisms are of significant importance. Soft handover, which is primarily a mechanism for seamless handovers (make before break), also reduces the interference within the cells by exploiting multiple simultaneous connections to lower the transmit power of the mobile stations (see [1], [2]). In this article we present an analytical model for soft handover where multiple connections between a mobile station and the base stations within reach are taken into account. An approximation of the frame error rate based on the received signal strength in the uplink is provided for 12.2 kbps service. In addition the approach taken to calculate the soft handover gain is described and results are presented.

Analytical characterization of the soft handover gain in UMTS

Abstract Soft handover is one of the key features in UMTS networks. For a sophisticated network planning it is necessary to understand the influence of soft handover on the capacity and coverage of UMTS systems which is expressed by the soft handover gain. In this paper we derive a method for computing interference distributions for UMTS networks with and without soft handover. Thus, we are abl...

Dowlink Soft Handover Gain in Umts Networks under Different Power Control Conditions

In this paper, the downlink soft handover gain is analysed in UMTS networks under three different power control situations: without power control, with perfect power control and with imperfect power control. The results show that although power control in the downlink direction is not as crucial as it in the uplink direction, it does have a significant influence on the downlink soft handover ga...

Investigation of soft-handover near street crossings in UMTS live Networks

In this paper we measured the soft-handover (SHO) probability at and near street crossings in UMTS. Literature quotes two main propagation paths in urban macro-cell scenarios: along street-canyons and over the rooftops. Due to the fact that propagation along street canyons is one of the main propagation paths we expected high SHO probability at street crossings. To evaluate this effect we measu...

A hybrid (N/M)CHO soft/hard vertical handover technique for heterogeneous wireless networks

In this paper we investigate the potentiality and the benefits of a soft Vertical Handover (VHO) mechanism, compared with the traditional hard approach. More specifically, we present an analytical scheme for seamless service continuity in a heterogeneous network environment, modeled by means of a multi-dimension Markov chain. The call blocking probabilities, as well as the soft and hard vertica...
